Follow Jesus.
Love People.

It’s all about Jesus.

At Westover Hills Church, our mission is simple — Follow Jesus. Love People. As a church, we exist to create a space where families can meet Jesus, find community, and grow in their faith. At Westover we believe, better is possible.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!  2 Corinthians 5:17

When Christ-followers put God at the center of their lives and seek a strong relationship with Him, we call that Making Great. We are a church where everyone is invited to seek and experience Making New and Making Great moments in their lives.

We’re part of the Assemblies of God.

The Assemblies of God (AG) was founded in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas with 300 people at the founding convention. Today there are 13,004 churches in the U.S. with more than 3 million members and adherents and more than 69 million Assemblies of God members worldwide, making the AG the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination.

As part of the AG, we subscribe to the 16 doctrines established two years after its founding. These doctrines became our Statement of Fundamental Truths. Four of these truths are considered our core beliefs due to the key role they play in reaching the lost and building the believer and the church: Salvation, Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Divine Healing and The Second Coming of Christ.

Our story

  • 1986

    First service

Pastor Jim and Denise Rion started the church in April of 1986. The first service took place in a rented store-front building on Culebra Road, and we were called "Ingram Assembly of God."
  • 1988

    First building

When the search began for a permanent home, Pastor Jim felt led to an undeveloped area of San Antonio called Westover Hills. God only knew it would become one of the fastest growing areas in the country.
  • 1999

    New Worship Center

When multiple services were not enough to accommodate the church's growth, a new Worship Center was built. It opened in December 1999 with triple the seating capacity of the first sanctuary.
  • 2007

    Family Life Center

A Family Life Center was added in September 2007. Kids Ministry moved into the new addition, while middle and high school students inherited the first building, now known as the Student Center.
  • 2010

    Spanish Campus

To reach our Hispanic community, Westover Hills launched a Spanish service in the fall of 2010. Pastor Mario Escobedo joined the team to lead Westover Hills - Español, a second congregation meeting at the flagship location.
  • 2012

    Medina Valley Campus

An opportunity to expand to the Medina Valley area came in 2012. David Barnes, longtime children's pastor for Westover Hills, transitioned to lead Westover Hills - Medina Valley located in Castroville.
  • 2014

    Remodeled Auditorium

In early 2011, plans were unveiled for a Worship Center expansion at the flagship campus. A new 2,200-seat auditorium, complete with state-of-the-art technology, opened in February 2014.
  • 2015

    Sports Complex

Pastor Jim announced plans for a $5 million Sports Complex in 2015. Intended as an outreach to serve the San Antonio community by offering year-round opportunities for kids, the dream became a reality in the fall of 2018 with the launch of outdoor youth leagues.
  • 2020

    Discover Church

In the fall of 2020, our Medina Valley Campus became it's own Assemblies of God church — Discover Church.
  • 2023

    Present day

As one of the 100 largest churches in the nation, we are amazed at how God has blessed our humble beginnings and made Westover what it is today.
